Why am I surprised?

I should know by now that whenever you start a house project, it is never going to take as long as you estimate. EVER. The 1/2 bath makeover is in full swing, but it's already starting to get on my nerves. Here is what it has looked like for the last 8 months that we have lived here (or the last 50 years it has existed!)...

SO UGLY.
I hate hate hate this picture.

So immediately after the foundation guys left, I had a wallpaper pulling party. Haven and Maelie were both invited...

What incredible helpers they were. Everything was going great, we were all in a giddy mood, when I stepped up on the toilet and gave the wallpaper on the soffit a yank. That's exactly when the giddiness came screeching to a halt. Because I saw this...

WHY?!?!?

Apparently at some point in the last 50 years, there was a water leak directly above this bathroom. I'm not sure if it came from a leak in a pipe or from the master bath shower that is directly above. But water entered the picture at some point in time. And I'm not quite sure how the wallpaper hung on to the wall with that much water damage. But it did. (Sometimes with an assist from our old friend the Scotch tape. Seriously wish I was kidding.) The wallpaper was cleverly disguising the mold and damage lurking below. The good news is that the mold was on the layer of paint underneath the wallpaper, which is flaking off the wall anyway. And it's not a lot of mold. Just a bit in a few places. The bad news is that we (meaning Adam) will have to somehow repair the damaged soffit. Not sure at this point if that means completely replacing all the drywall on the soffit, or just patching up with spackle. But we will get it done somehow.

Overall, I am hoping this room will be a super cheap redo. I already have the paint - it's the color I was originally going to paint Maelie's room, then I changed my mind. Might as well use it somewhere! We picked up the light fixture on clearance at Lowe's for under $20, the mirror was $3 at Maj-R Thrift and I have some DIY t-shirt frames I made a while back all ready to hang on on the walls. The vanity will be painted and we are going to buy a new sink top and faucet. I am keeping an eye out at ReStore for a sink top, but am ok if we have to end up buying one new. This little bath is rarely used, so I'm not really going to get super picky about it being a showstopper. Adam is also adding new outlets in all 3 bathrooms. That super ugly medicine cabinet? It's in all 3 baths. And does extra duty as a light fixture and outlet. So by removing the medicine cabinet, all 3 baths are without lights AND outlets. Crazy. He got started on the process this morning and I am SO excited!

Well, I guess I'd better get off the computer. That wallpaper glue isn't going to remove itself. Ugh.

Can't wait until it's done!!
